WAKE INCEPTION: 7 women entrepreneurs came together to help other women to succeed as entrepreneurs by sharing their ideas and lending required support. Thus dawned a new chapter in history of women called AWAKE at Bangalore.
AWAKE was inaugurated by Mr. S.R. Bommai, the then Karnataka Industries Minister along with Mr. B. Ratnakar, CMD Canara Bank and founder members.
Started Business Counseling services for the prospective women entrepreneurs. Membership was open to all women in business
First workshop on food industry for women entrepreneurs was organized
AWAKE participated in the 3rd National Convention at New Delhi
National Conference of Women Entrepreneurs in coordination with National Association of Young Entrepreneurs (NAYE) was organized at Bangalore.
Training department was initiated with First Entrepreneurship Development Program (EDP) at Bangalore.
The first State Conference of Women Entrepreneurs was held at CFTRI Campus, Mysore. 200 delegates from different states participated in the conference. Speaker of Karnataka Legislative Assembly inaugurated the conference.
The second State Conference of Women Entrepreneurs was held at Malnad Engineering College, Hassan, Karnataka. 300 delegates participated in the conference. An entrepreneurship cell was set up to counsel engineering students to venture into business.
AWAKE moved into its own premises at B-76, KSSIDC Industrial Estate, Rajajinagar, Bangalore.
The Research and Resource Centre was set up for documentation and studies with the support of CIPE, USA.
To support aspiring entrepreneurs, a Business Incubator Facility for food processing, the first of its kind in Asia, was set up with the support of USAID.
AWAKE got the affiliation to Women’s World Banking, New York. WWB supported AWAKE by organizing a number of orientation workshops for the sustainability of the organization, thus bringing a long term planning in AWAKE’s functioning.
AWAKE participated in the WWB conference in Atlanta. The theme of the conference was ‘Give women credit’.
AWAKE organized GOOD SHOW exhibition.
AWAKE played a pivotal role in organizing the launch of ‘VISWA’ program of Govt. of Karnataka at Kogilehalli, inaugarated by the then Prime Minister of India Shri P.V. Narasimha Rao.

Launching of Rural Training Programs under sponsorship of NORAD at Bijapur, Gulbarga, Mysore and Kundapur. More than 150 women got trained in these programs. The success rate was 65%

The Second Decade: 1994 – 2003
AWAKE celebrated the decade of dedicated services to entrepreneurship. A mega event was organized in AWAKE’s premises at Rajajinagar. AWAKE honored some of its members and friends from the network who had contributed to the growth of AWAKE.
A National workshop on Transfer of Productive Technology and Encouragement of entrepreneurship among rural women was organized under the sponsorship of UN APCTT. A tech book, the Facilitator’s Handbook and the Resource Book were brought out A regional workshop on Women in Business was hosted by AWAKE, organized by EDII and sponsored by UNIFEM
AWAKE participated in International Women Entrepreneur’s Conference organized by NAYE Global Conference at Mexico Matchmaker program of CBI, Netherlands
Two major studies – ‘Capacity Utilization’ and ‘Working Capital needs of Small Scale Food Industry’ was conducted with the grant from Ministry of Processed Food.
AWAKE co-hosted the Asian Regional Conference in Bangalore, along with FWWB, Ahmedabad. 10 countries participated in the conference.
AWAKE released ‘Neravigara Kaipidi’, a facilitators hand book in Kannada
An ILO sponsored Trainers Training Program was conducted in Bangalore.
AWAKE conducted the first Enterprise Learning Network (ELN) program under the aegis of WWB. This helped building linkages and network in garment industries.

The third State Conference of Women Entrepreneurs was held in Bangalore, with the theme ‘Tradition to Technology’. 700 people from all over the state and different parts of the country participated in the conference. Ms. Nancy Barry, President of WWB, gave the key note address.

The Third Decade: 2004 – 2010
VISION 2020 focus Women Entrepreneurs – an interactive meet with His Excellency Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, former President of India was organized in Bangalore by AWAKE on the occasion of AWAKE’s 20th anniversary. The Business Incubator Manual, published by AWAKE with the support of NABARD and the Kannada Case Study book ‘New Millennium’ were released during the occasion.
AWAKE’s CD business directory supported by ZDH-Sequa and Touch screen Kiosk supported by Canara Bank was launched during Mix’ n Match – vendor development meet at Bangalore.
AWAKE conducted ‘Training of Trainers in Project Cycle Management: A logical Framework Approach’ with the sponsorship of ZDH Sequa and APO.

Business Incubator ‘ANANYA’ was inaugurated on June 3rd, 2009 at Bijapur.
Awake is a consortia partner with University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore under ICAR-NAIP project on “Value Chain on Commercialization of Maize” from 2009-2012.
Awake received HP-CSR grant for 2009-2010 under HP-LIFE program for ASIA PACIFIC JAPAN region for the 3rd consecutive time.
Ms. Corinne Heijn, Founder President of ‘ United Success’, Netherlands, Europe, visited AWAKE on 25th Jan 2010, to discuss the tie up with awake and establish a working relationship and network of United Success in India.
