1983

  • AWAKE INCEPTION: 7 women entrepreneurs came together to help other women to succeed as entrepreneurs by sharing their ideas and lending required support. Thus dawned a new chapter in history of women called AWAKE at Bangalore.
  • AWAKE was inaugurated by Mr. S.R. Bommai, the then Karnataka Industries Minister along with Mr. B. Ratnakar, CMD Canara Bank and founder members.

1984

  • Started Business Counseling services for the prospective women entrepreneurs. Membership was open to all women in business
  • First workshop on food industry for women entrepreneurs was organized
  • AWAKE participated in the 3rd National Convention at New Delhi

1985

  • National Conference of Women Entrepreneurs in coordination with National Association of Young Entrepreneurs (NAYE) was organized at Bangalore.
  • Training department was initiated with First Entrepreneurship Development Program (EDP) at Bangalore.

1988

  • The first State Conference of Women Entrepreneurs was held at CFTRI Campus, Mysore. 200 delegates from different states participated in the conference. Speaker of Karnataka Legislative Assembly inaugurated the conference.

1989

  • The second State Conference of Women Entrepreneurs was held at Malnad Engineering College, Hassan, Karnataka. 300 delegates participated in the conference. An entrepreneurship cell was set up to counsel engineering students to venture into business.
  • AWAKE moved into its own premises at B-76, KSSIDC Industrial Estate, Rajajinagar, Bangalore.
  • The Research and Resource Centre was set up for documentation and studies with the support of CIPE, USA.
  • To support aspiring entrepreneurs, a Business Incubator Facility for food processing, the first of its kind in Asia, was set up with the support of USAID.

1990

  • AWAKE got the affiliation to Women’s World Banking, New York. WWB supported AWAKE by organizing a number of orientation workshops for the sustainability of the organization, thus bringing a long term planning in AWAKE’s functioning.
  • AWAKE participated in the WWB conference in Atlanta. The theme of the conference was ‘Give women credit’.

1991

  • AWAKE organized GOOD SHOW exhibition.
  • AWAKE played a pivotal role in organizing the launch of ‘VISWA’ program of Govt. of Karnataka at Kogilehalli, inaugarated by the then Prime Minister of India Shri P.V. Narasimha Rao.

1992

  • First retreat program Partnership Agreement and Action Plan, WWB, was organized for 2 days for the board members of AWAKE
  • AWAKE representation in the Asia Women Regional Conference at Japan
  • Credit reach for women entrepreneurs – Policy Practice Gap with reference to Collateral Security – a major study was published
  • Final report of ILO-Arpet study on technology transfer from India to Mozambique on Fruit Juice Processing and on leather training to Tanzania was submitted.
  • New administrative block along with the Training Hall was built with the loan assistance from SIDBI and grant form KSFC
  • Launching of Rural Training Programs under sponsorship of NORAD at Bijapur, Gulbarga, Mysore and Kundapur. More than 150 women got trained in these programs. The success rate was 65%
  • An Objective Oriented Project Planning workshop was conducted by TOOL, Netherlands, for members of AWAKE
  • The first teleconference was organized at AWAKE connecting Bangalore with Boston on a hotline with Ms. Brigette Berger, Boston, editor of the book ‘The Culture of Entrepreneurship’, coordinated by Ms. Miriam E Guichard, Dy. Consul, USIS.
  • AWAKE participated in an NGO Experience Sharing workshop in Netherlands
